did any one purchase a home studio from ebay with softboxes backdrops etc from ebay i am thinking of buying one but would like some feedback are they any good for family portraits

A lot of the folks used to spray an old umbrella white which worked just as well.
It gives a nice soft even light.
Old plain velvet curtains also come in hand for back cloths.

I do photography in my spare time and make a bit of money from taking photos of people's kids, pets etc. I tend to just book an outdoor session with them and then just use the scenery as the back drop and natural lighting.
I agree with Wak to just hang a cloth up as a backdrop, if you stand the subject a few meters away from it, it will work just fine.
