ipod touch download

everytime i try to download the latest software 4.2 it crashes my ipod (3rd Gen). It's a new machine should i take back as faulty ? or any ideas.

Try a restore first. Connect your ipod touch to itunes and click the ipod under devices, then click Restore, under Summary. This should then reset your ipod to original settings, then run the update. If that completes then resync.

if you're ipod touch should run the gen 3 software you may have problems if the gen 4 software hasn't dowloaded properly.
to download it properly, log onto the link provided, download the software and save it to your desktop, when dowloaded, open itunes and connect ipod, put ipod into recovery mode by holding lock/power button & menu button for around 5-10 seconds, once you've done this and you have the restore ipod screen on your ipod, press shift and click restore, then it;ll open up a drop box where you can choose the software you wish to upload to the ipod, let it go through the installation process and you'll have ios 4 on there.
