Right click on file, copy, browse to external drive in My Computer, right click, paste.
Sorry, misread question!
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "all of my media goes through windows"

If you are using windows media player to rip your CDs to your hard drive then they will be located in the my music folder in your documents folder, you just need to copy that to the external drive.

DVDs can't easily be ripped to the hard drive, so if you are doing that then you'll need to refer to the software you are using to find where it rips them to.

Thanks for that CF, most of what is in wmp is not showing in the my music folder for some reason
either open WMP and then click the little arrow on the bottom of the rip button, select more options and at the top it will say where it rips to, or just use the search on the start menu and search for any track that you can't find to locate it.

Thanks CF I will try that out.
I think this step by step guide will help you a lot. It will show you how to rip and copy video from DVD to computer hard drive. Supports personal DVD and copyright protected DVD. The guide is easy to understand and it works pretty well for me all the time.
