Why isn't this done here? Wouldn't this be a great idea if only to keep roads free of ice and snow in the winter?

100 years too late? So you're saying that the steam system was built 100 years ago right?

Read the 2nd paragraph...1882, which is circa 100 years. Can you imagine the chaos to install such a system in a city today?

Eddie that's what first got me interested, i used to see many films and wonder what the smoke/steam was. So marilyn monroe's famous scene i which her dress was blown up was maybe fro one of the vents? If it was she was very lucky as I read this from my link.

When I was in Stockholm years ago I realised that the Centrum is also centrally heated, so that the pavements, escalators and so on don't freeze up in their severe winters.
Most surprising and welcome was the discovery that the concrete seats on the Metro platforms are also internally heated, making it a real pleasure to wait for one's train.
