just wondered if its been zapped, and if so, why?

Try turning 'on' numlock - shift + NumLk key on my laptop (ThinkPad). Then do Alt 3 (using the 3 on the letter key). ♥♥♥
Remember to turn 'off' Numlock when you want to resume typing.
