Tranferring money from UK to Australia

I am about to receive the balance of my mother's estate and wondered how best to transfer this to Australia.

We have an account in the UK where I had intended to leave it until the exchange rate improved but it would earn almost zero interest. I was also told by the bank that I could only move 5000 pounds at a time as I'm not living in the country (money laundering). Is this really true?

I have discovered there are currency exchange companies like OzForex or Tranzfers but how safe are they and how would I get the money to them?

Any other suggestions?
