in this cold weather do you find it works out cheaper to leave heating on 24/7 and turn it up and down from the thermostat or do you think its better to put on the timer and have it come on in the morning and evening? was'nt sure where to put this question

I have a traditional boiler - I generally just have it on a timer - couple of hours in the morining then on before kids and I come home form school and off at night. Last year when it was really cold I was finding that it was taking ages for the house to get warm when the kids and I got home so I started leaving it on and just turning it down a bit while we were out. Still switched it off at night though. It didn't seem to make much difference, if anything, the bill was slightly cheaper than the previous winters (our DD went down a few quid), but as I only did it for a few weeks, I couldn't really swear that that was the reason.
He's just texted back. He said it's cheaper to have a combi boiler on timer.
annie -thats what I did exactly with the double timer bit.
Im gonna follow your example and leave it ticking over (like ummm said) at least while its soo cold.Im like you though -couldnt stand it on during he night.
Sorted :)
Wish I hadn't text him now :-(

He's been texting since.....now I remember why I left..!
I'm very lucky as my heating is included with my rent so I can leave my heating on all the time and just open a window when it gets too hot (like now). Sheltered housing has it's compensations.
fruitsalad can i borrow your thread. central heating again..............my newish boiler is working fine. but this am for the first time there is a fast ticking sound coming from it when it is on, pressure ok. no knobs been changed , should i be concearned ? tia
