So what is an urban myth. Is it different from a suburban myth or a country myth? Got any examples?

Another childhood memory trashed!
Fact ludwig !!
Dagman -really ???. So people actually test it -I wouldnt -i'd be terrified lol
In 1960 Captain Pugwash was history. How can you remember this stuff? Are you all as old as me?
..true.
As a kid I hated Capt. Pugwash - I much preferred that odd character that looked like an egg with a propellor on top that emanated classical music ...(now what was his name?)
jno - it's achieved mythical status. I still hear people claiming it to be true.
When the first Chinese restaurants opened in Belfast there were rumours that cats were being caught and used as ingredients in the food.
fair enough, ludwig. Perhaps someone should shoot Lewis, to preserve the purity of the myth.
Sorry, but I think you are confusing urban myth with fact.
would that be like the Kentucky Fried Rat, sandyRoe?

This site is an excellent mythbuster

Kentucky Fried Rat strikes me as a better alternative to Kentucky Fried Chicken.
I wonder if the pool levels rise every day! here's Little Britains take on it!

mike, it went on much later than that

from which I see that the Guardian was actually sued for printing the Master Bates stuff as fact, and lost
Victor Lewis-Smith originally claimed he had unwittingly repeated the Pugwash error. Somehow he is now the originator...

whoops, I forgot the Smith on his name.

Not sure if I'm going to take his word for it that he didn't originate them, though. I can't personally say I'd ever heard of this before VLS put it in print, but perhaps ludwig or mike remember it.
I love VLS's phone hoaxes - he's like Chris Morris on speed !
"An urban myth" is merely a trendy term for a popular misconception.
Wasn't there one about Bob Holness playing saxophone on 'Baker Street'?
Dris, as long as they don't test it immediately after we've got out, we should be OK ;-)
