"Qatar, the smallest nation to host the World Cup, used its 30-minute presentation to underline how the tournament could unify a region ravaged by conflict. Presenters also promised to overcome summer heat of up to 130 degrees by air conditioning outdoor stadiums it will build, then dismantle and give to needy nations."
Is it in July? - would have to be no later than end of March/1st half April or after October to be comfortable - not unless the stadia are all indoors - which is not beyod the wit or the purses of the Al-Thani family.......plus assistance of sponsors such as the Grocer of Knightsbridge.
Have they changed their immigration policies - when I visited Doha back in the 80s, the airport was totally crap and they used to keep your passport while you were in the country.....very unnerving that. The oinly sanity was that the number one hotel, the Sheraton, was ok. I also think that you can now get a drink in hotels/restaurants - which you couldnt back then; it was, alcohol-wise, as arid as the desert outside.
I`ve been in Doha in the summer when it`s been 52 degs. It`s ok there though. They`ve built up a lot of hotels. They`ve even got Carrefour and Debenhams. You can drink in the hotels. Not sure about anywhere else though. You certainly couldn`t wander about drinking which is a good thing.
Been a long time since out there - Bahrain was ok back then as being true Sunnites, you could get a drink (an excess of alcohol is a poision in their interpretation of the Koran).
Remember when they opened the Causeway and it took the police on the Saudi side some while to work out the one part of the car that isn't really used - the windscreen water reservoir....and that Saudis were using them for Scotch...... Then when you went over, the police would ask for the screen to be squirted and tasted the 'product'......
