schools closing more now

TBH it does my head in a bit when people of a certain generation keep moaning, saying 'oh back in my day we went to school rain or shine'. BUT many times now, the schools close because of the teachers, not the pupils. Back in your day, most teachers would have walked into school so wouldn't have much problem with icy roads, but many of my teachers live between 5 and 35 miles away from the school and can't get in if the roads are blocked. And if there are very few teachers that can get to school, it can't open.

PLUS I went into school on monday, even though 1 of the 2 boilers was broken, we all had to, we just wrapped up well, had extra heaters and relocated to the warmest parts of the school!


So there, xx molly. And my question, in light of this, does it change anyone's opinion who kept complaining about the schools closing because of a few flakes of snow? Which doesn't happen, there has to be six inches of snow around my school for the doors to be blocked so the school has to close, which round here happens maybe once of twice a winter.

Molly, I don't think anyone of a "certain generation" is moaning. Don't let it worry you, much less do your head in. Don't be upset at people expressing an opinion. They are certainly not having a go at the kids, nor in fact at most of the teachers. The problem is the law since there are various rules and guidelines about the ratio of teachers to kids as you have touched upon. If the teachers can't get in (ie their roads are blocked, or their childcare is up the swannee) the Head has to take a view as to whether he or she can safely open the school. In this "where there is blame there is a claim culture" I really can't blame them.

Nonetheless, you should accept with some joy that times have changed. I am only 20 years older than you, but I can remember my school closing only once (and that was because the snow drifts were so bad the village was completely cut off - it took my dad going into town in his tractor to fetch emergency supplies for the old folk).
