I know the weather has been bad but a huge supermarket unable to get a delivery of bread? What the hell is going on with this country, why can we not cope with a few inches of snow? I only went in for that but ended up coming out with 2 big boxes of Carling which were on a fabulous offer I have to say. I suppose it softened my annoyance.

I'm grateful we've got Morrisons, they bake on-site - but again, that depends on how much stock of flour etc they have out the back. People are also panic buying, they are falling on bread like it's going out of fashion, that's not helping. It's at times like this that people realise how much we depend upon road transport to bring us everything we want to buy - at other times, we don't really notice.
you say that, but i bet few people have ever actually bothered to buy such items at snow tyres or chains, decent grip boots or wellies, snow shovel, grit etc etc... in fact anything at all except for a warm coat in order to cope with snow and ice...in the same way many people dont own a fan or air con for the hot weather...
and if an artic lorry goes out of control on ice...then the results will be a lot worse that you having no bread....
simple answer is we are not used to it, and therefore dont plan for it...

the supermarkets round here have dispensed with their store rooms to make more floor space, and rely on "just in time" deliveries to keep themselves stocked. the result is the slightest amount of congestion on the roads, and they sell out. them having no bread or milk on a friday evening is pretty much the norm.
all the bad weather has done is make every day a friday, from that point of view.
