The best advice I can give you is to try & find someone to show you how to do it as those diagrams in books just don't seem to mean a thing. Well not to me, I found myself doing the map thing & turning it upside down!
I've been doing a blanket since 1983 btw! :-)
As a 'non diagram understander' I agree with Robinia. My left handed mother-in-law taught me to crochet by facing her and copying what she did.
I'm not that great but have managed a couple of blankets. One by the spiral method - crocheting in a circle....but the easiest was mountains of squares, then crocheting them all together.
If you don't have anyone to show you then as shaneystar says Patons is an excellent book for beginners.
