Someone at work has sent an email warning others that police are stopping motorists for the above offence.

It may well be in the highway code but never heard of it enforced before. Have the police been instructed to book motorists for every pedantic and little known rule and regulation in an attempt to boost goverment funds?

i heard the same - not sure how true it is but it wouldn't surprise me.... its all about the revenue.
It's possible that you could be fined for having excessive snow on top of your car... but.....

This was doing the rounds a few days ago. Strathclyde Police actually issued a statement saying that it was false.
I assume it counts as having an unsafe load on your roof. We had some clown in front of us with the equivalent of a snowman on his roof which slid in front of us as he pulled away.
It's probably stemmed from an article on telly a few weeks back. It was about road safety in the snow.
At the start of the recent bad-weather there was a segment on one of the morning programmes with an AA-man running through an idiots guide to clearing snow and ice from all your windows prior to setting off.
He mentioned the 'snow on the roof' being an offence; it was the first time I have ever heard an 'official' warning to clear your roof.
Perhaps it is a new, or newly enforceable, regulation ?
Highway code rule 229 mentions it but it isn't a "must".
That's the one Jack.
Thread just a few days ago if its any help-remebered as I posted on it:

So according to chuck's link your point is rubbish.
Although there have got to be areas where (if it is true) it's unenforceable.

"Honestly Officer, there was no snow on my roof when I set out on my journey !"
Never mind snow ..has anyone followed an artic..no pun intended..when sheets of ice come crashing down onto your bonnet!!

It's right to book people who don't bother to clear snow from their cars - it's so dangerous for anyone following in their wake - but I can't help thinking it's an easy target and good for statistics.
I will always clear my roof of snow now. When we were out walking along a (fortunately) quiet road, a car came round the corner, going at a reasonable speed for the conditions and the whole load of snow on her roof fell down on to her windscreen. She could not see a thing as her windscreen was totally obscured. She slithered to a halt and cleared it. By the Grace of God there was no one behind her or in front of her , otherwise the consequences would have been dire.
SO, I don't care whether it's illegal or not. I'm never driving with snow on my roof again.
Very sensible answer there Ladyalex, it's a pity a lot more don't think like that, & yes, if people cannot take time to clear their car roofs they need booking.
I can see why you should clear it, obviously, but I did have to laugh, last year, when I was passed on the (ungritted) dual carriageway but a car doing about 10mph through the thick snow with a mini snowman on its roof... :)
It is illegal along with driving with obsured vision, unsecured loads.no brake light.one headlight in fact anything which is a hazard.
Surprised that people are surprised to this day-snow on the roof isnt a new charge -its been on the go for years and rightly so.
Not at anyone on this thread at all but surely it must amaze you that some people actually are allowed out on the roads with no common sense and the Police have to resort to fining them to instill it........
