What SHOULD I be feeding the birds? We've got mainly waterfowl (living on the edge of a huge lake) but it is frozen solid. I've been out every day with pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, bread and sultanas and they seem to like all of those. I also put bacon rind in the trees for the garden birds. But it is very cold and the ground is frozen solid so I think I should do more.
Re: bread. It's fairly 'useless' to birds ... fills 'em up without much benefit. You've said you put bacon rind out ... soak that same bread in the bacon fat and then feed it to them, much better. :-)
