Left this on by mistake and now the bottom is black. Whats the best way to remove the blakc burnt on layer? I have left it soaking in undiluted washing up liquid but it has hardly shifted it.

Personally, I think household bleach is as good as anything. I have used it for many many years. An egg cupful in a pint of hot water, leave to soak for a few hours and then get to work with a cloth and cream cleaner. ( Providing of course that one is sure the article is stainless steel and not polished aluminium.)
Best of luck....Ron

For future reference, Lankeela, a detergent, such as washing up liquid, doesn't work on its own - it needs at least some water. It's a bit technical, but hopefully it's explained here...

One of those shredded metal type scouring pads, warm water and Cif (or similar) should do the job.
