Feeling very sorry for myself.

Slipped on the icy pavement, hurt my back to the right side. I am in pain. Not planning to sue anyone, ( don't like the blame culture) but should the local council grit the paths. Surely the roads belong to the highways and the paths to the local councils. As well as council tax we pay a service charge. My garage is across the road up an incline, I rent the plot from the council. I got the car out but can't get it back in again because it has not been gritted. Large Bacardi and bed I think. The car is sitting on a side road waiting to be hit by some one who loses control.

They've only (re)started gritting the roads properly this year. It'll take them another year or two to think about making the pavements safe for ratepayers as well (though I believe some councils do this).

In our local newspaper the headlines told us we had plenty of grit to see us through the winter. They've gritted the main roads, but all the side roads and pavements are untreated, it's very slippy. If we hadn't a car I would not have been able to go out. I dread to think how many old people are stranded in their homes without help.

Thankyou all for your posts. I live in a cul-de-sac. At 61 I am one of the youngest here, the eldest being 97. I try to do my bit for all of them shopping etc. Now I'm knacked as well. The council who I have told are not interested.

Same here Gran, we are on a side road adjacent to the main road which does get gritted, but we don't.
My parents, in their 70's live on a steep cul de sac which never gets gritted. there are a lot of older residents there but luckily one of the younger ones has taken it upon himself to clear and grit the road the last couple of years "don't ask me where I got it from" he said, good for him!

My local council(Kensington & Chelsea) USED to grit the pavements(till about 5 years ago) when a man slipped on the grit and threatened to sue(he didn't get anywhere), and so they stopped gritting the pavements.
Councils can't win really can they?

micmak, sorry to hear of your accident. Suggestion: sprinkle table salt over the area in question and the ice will melt. Depending on the size of the area you may need several pots or bags but it will be well worth the investment if it means you can avoid slipping again and get your car out of harms way.
