i have a reservation number to call that is three digits, then another three, then four.  anyone know what bits are what?  area code, etc.  also, what do i need to add/takeaway to dial from england?

Your number probably looks like this: 505-555-1212 (made up #0.  The first three digits are, as you surmised, the area code.  The front of any telephone directory will have a page showing where each is located.  The second set of three digits is also location dependent, but only the phone copmanies know the exact boundaries of each set.  The last 4 digits simply define the unique number for the individual customer.  All toll free numbers begin with 800, 866, or 877... new ones are added as needed so this may not be a complete list.  Avoid 900 series numbers.  They are area codes that marketers (especially pornographic sites) use to entice one to call and then charge outrageous per minute rates to the unsuspecting caller.

Calling from England would require the addition of a two digit internatinal code... for the U.S. it is 00 + 1*...
