Must have been about 10 years ago. They wore kaftans and flowers, tambourines, very catchy, clap along gospel. Had a hit in the UK.

10 years ago? They were 40 years too late.
Not really. Does Goombay Dance Band- 7 Tears fit the bill?

Yer, no kidding! It's driving me nuts though. Think they were american and had a strange cult-like name. Sounds like a joke, but it was a catchy, uplifting song.

Love the polyphonic spree! I think Jarvis Cocker appeared with them on something, dunno if it was TOTP or Jonathan Ross or something like that.
only one that springs to mind is Kula Shaker, god knows why they were British and not sure if they were hippyish
I was thinking Kula Shaker as well but I googled them and I could only find quite rocky stuff. I do remember them doing something hippy though
your description = polyphonic spree.
