Can anyone explain why suddenly every time I switch my PC off, all the icons on the desktop move towards the top of the screen and change position?

When you restart are the icons back to where they were or in the new position?
if you do not shut down the pc properly through shut dow in the start menu, the computer doesn't save where the icons were positioned when the computer was turned off...this could be one reason for the computer messing about with the icons...also if you have win98 or above and active desktop is activated the computer may move the icons to where it thinks they are best positioned for you. you can turn off active desktop in start:settings:control panel:display...

I wish I knew!  I am having a minor problem with my IBM Thinkpad ...I have an icon layout that suits me and 99% of the time it stays the way I set it up....then...when I do a restart...or, more irritatingly, whenever I attach a flash-drive or my iPod etc... the icons all change position and will not revert to MY arrangement until I "drag and drop" them back! Most annoying. I've tried all the "arrange icons by,.." but with no luck. Is there anybody out there who has the answer?? I am sure there is a simple cure but as an OAP newcomer, on a steep learning curve, I could sure use a bit of advice!!
