Midwife

Is anyone currently training as a midwife or has just qualified recently?  Whats it like I am thinking about training. I'm 26 and worried about being a mature student

A lot of people go into midwifery training after qualifying as a nurse so you won't be the oldest one on the course.

My mum has just started Uni today to become a Speech Therapist she's 51 and she couldnt wait to get started. Dont worry about being a mature student there will be many other people on the course in the same position as you so you'l make friends easily.

A lot of parents-to-be I imagine would prefer to see a mature nidwife looking after them.  Go for it and don't look back!

As a midwife myself I know from experiance that age is irrelivant both during training and once qualified. Your abiliy to care for women is dependant on your personality rather than age. The main things to consider as a mature student is any commitments/responsibilities you may already have, as midwifery courses are fulltime, demanding courses requiring both academic and practical assesments which include you working shifts(nights & weekends!) so financial and childcare issues should be considered carefully before you apply as you don't get paid for the courses. If you are serious about applying then very good luck, it's a wonderful profession (most of the time!).
