"up to a point" was my initial idea, but don't see the word play. I'm still puzzling on the seasonal work- is it a christmas carol?

I think I now have the seasonal work ,thanks graudian, and the second verse does concur with what I've done to some of the clues in Grid B. Now to fit the jgsaw Grid A together.

Also when you add the letter to the across clues in grid b- is it in the word rather than at the end?

I presume you just knock the first letter off the other across clues?

I don't understand your "Walter" connection (I could just be thick!) My seasonal work is to do with Tennyson. In GRID B you either add a letter (always the same one) or take off a letter (always the same one) for the across clues to fit in.Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you more djawhufc!

Sorry djawhufc I didn't answer clearly - the extra letter can go in anywhere in the word (beg or end or in the middle somewhere) Similarly the letter taken out can be from anywhere. All GRID B entries are real words so you will soon see where to add or minus the appropriate letter.

I had the answer to the "Winning ball amid cheeers with aim somewhat" clue in grid A.
I found that the four 10 letter answers revealed so far in this thread (naughty, naughty) would only fit together in one way and that, as they all came from the first clue in each pair of clues, that would be in Grid A.. This provided a good way to start the fill for grid A. 24A is, as you know, to be entered thematically. The square count is, as you have already, 8 letters, but the clue gives 9. So you need to lose a letter as specified by the first line of the second verse. The cross is an animal.
