Mirtazapine - Weight Gain

Hi all. I have been on Mirtazapine for about 5 or 6 weeks, and in that time I have gained a bit of weight. Having read up on the drug, I know that this is a fairly common side effect. What I'm wondering is though, is it purely through an increased appetite and therefore an increased intake of food? Or would it be through a decreased metabolism or something that isn't connected to amount of food eaten?

Basically, I'm wanting to know whether making a big attempt to eat less and exercise more will help to battle against the weight gain, or whether it will happen anyway.

Any ideas/tips/advice etc welcome.

Thank you.
