Which England batsman currently holds the highest test average of all time?

Could it be Herbert Sutcliffe?

I think the OP means which English batsman has the highest test average for an Englishman. I sense no deception beyond odd phrasing.

The only trick i could see would be if it it was tail-end batsman who had lots of Not Out innings or, more likely, someone who only played a handful of tests and scored quite a lot of runs over several innings but was out only once.

Alastair Cook's batting average in the CURRENT Test series is well over 100 (123.75) but his average across ALL Test matches is far lower (45.83).

Herbert Sutcliff, with a Test average of 60.73, is still at the top of the table among England players:
