NTL Broadband router

What router will work with NTL broadband? I have heard some don't work.

You are best checking on an NTL forum. That way people who are using a router with NTL can tell you what ones they are using.

Generally there are two types of routers, those for ADSL and those for cable (NTL and Telewest).

I think as long as you buy a CABLE router and not an ADSL router you will be OK.

Check your connection on the modem as well. It could either be an ethernet connection or a USB connection.

Make sure you buy the right router for your connection type.

Very quick response.

Problem is, I am tying to sort this for my daughter who is at Manchester Uni and I am 100 miles away and going on holiday tomorrow!!!!!

To put it in plain English (sorry for talking down).

I assume she has NTL and an NTL modem, with one computer plugged into it. 

I also assume she wants a router to share the broadband connection to one or more other computers.

That is fine. I do that with my Telewest broadband connection. 

So she really needs to check 2 main things:

1) What cable does she use to plug her computer into the NTL modem. It will either be an Ethernet CAT5 cable, or a USB cable.

So the router she buys must work with either an Ethernet cable, or a USB cable, whichever she has.

2) That the router she buys works with cable and not ADSL.

One other thing she needs to realise, each computer that wants to use the router will need to plug into it, wherever they are in the house. That will mean getting a cable from each PC to the router.

She can if she wishes buy a WIRELESS router, but then each PC that wants to work with the router has to have a wireless network card.

And then of course someone needs to connect it all up.

NTL recommends Ethernet cables rather than USB. (see ntlworld.com)

I have Belkin wireless router and wireless cards in two laptops - all works fine.

Connecting it all up was another matter!!!!

NTL are installing on Monday. She wants to use a wireless network. So I think you have answered all my questions - unless you have anything to add.

I have installed many routers for NTL customers, the Belkin ones work fine. I have had problems with linksys one concerning emails and attachments. My personal preference is the Belkin one.
BTW I do not work for NTL.

I bought a wireless package that was recommended on the NTL website.Its made by Actiontec,and at �99 was a little expensive, but it works great and I have had no problems with it.

hey ive got ntl broadband with router for other computer. It is linksys 2.4 ghz and works perfectly
