snow chains...are they ok to use in pairs?

a lot of sites just sell the pairs you see...do you need 4 though?

also anyone know any good sites/shop to get them from - cheap as possible

You only need to put them on the driven wheel

they are also illegal to use in the UK unless there is a significant cover of snow, meaning you'd have to keep putting them on and taking them off when ever you got to a clear bit of road.

Honestly, snow chains are not feasible in the UK.

hehe...its doing my head in, havent been able to drive since the snow started and its still about 4inches thick and showing no signs of melting, ...i figure for all ive spent in taxia i could have bought a set of chains by now!

not as good as studs/winter wheels but a lot easier to handle.....and cheaper

Snow chains are fine to use in pairs on the driven wheels, just remember when braking that the tyres with the chains on will have better grip than those that dont so if you have a front wheel drive car there is a chance of the rear skidding if you have to brake hard. I dont use them myself so cant comment on best prices or places, i much prefer winter tyres with sensible driving techniques as you dont have to keep taking them off and replacing them as the road surfaces change. Also as an advanced driving instructor I have witnessed the carnage that chains can cause to vehicles if they are not fitted correctly, you also have to bear in mind that you cant use full steering lock as this can cause the chains to foul on bodywork or more importantly brake pipes! Hope this is of some help to you.

the problem is many people aren't getting about...there are very few taxis about so waiting hours is a pain....other cars are skidding about, having crashes, near misses, minor bumps, getting stuck, swerving etc and a number of vehicles have been abandoned at the bottom of a bridge...i have no doubt my car would move about...i just dont want to risk it in this...
