Free anti virus package

Which is the best free anti virus package> I keep getting details of packages I could get, only to find they want payment. What is the best thing to do?

That's a little like asking which the "best" car is there's no one answer but a lot of people recommend AVG.

They have however had a bit of a problem recently crashing large numbers of windows 7 machines

All companies that offer free anti virus also SELL security software, so if you go to their web site it is somtimes hard to find the free versions.

Avast do a good free anti virus, also Microsoft Security Essentials (free) has had some good reports.

I use the free version of avast! http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index and it works fine for me.

Apologies for my double posting.....My first attempt appeared to have been rejected....Possible because AB was running slower than normal. Consequently I re-posted and was surprised to see the final result.

Incidentally, I have heard that Avast is good and costs nothing. However, I was not impressed with 'Free AVG'.

AVG has been having problems recently. They uploaded a bad signature file for the 64-Bit version of Windows 7 which causes a the system with AVG installed to constantly crash and require a reboot. This is in addition to problems they've had a year or so ago with Windows Vista. As a company, they have fallen from grace, and I think a lot of their success is them resting on their past achievements.

I second Microsoft Security Essentials. I've been using it for about a year now and it's installed on two PCs in my home. It's basic, but it does it's job, it's light on system resources and there is NO paid for version. It is what it is, and you get it free with nobody from Microsoft trying to sell you the paid for version, ever.

Yes.. They talk about it .. but far from the best.

One of the best free AV around at the moment is Microsoft Security Essentials. Compact and easier to use than AVG.
