In some countries it is not unusual for a man to have several wifes. If fact, it is quite prevalent when this is also sanctioned by their religion.

I think Wildwood is thinking that there would be a 50/50 male/female population and if, for example there was a population of 100 men and 100 women then there wouldn't be enough women for all the men to have multiple wives. Not sure what happens to them though!
Pixi; also a joke in my boyfriends house; his dad is always telling his mum that she should go and find him a new wife; she usually replies that she will then she can leave him and get half his money!

claymore may well be correct: young men with no prospect of marriage (because all the nubile women are being snapped up by well-off older men) channel their energies into hardline religion.

Not a complete answer, of course, since 99.999999% of Muslims aren't suicide bombers. But it may be a factor for a few.
