I wonder if any of you out there knows anything about sewing machines? The top cotton keeps breaking and I've tried everything I know to solve the problem - cleaning, oiling etc. and I'm using strong thread which is threaded properly, but to no avail. I'm a seamstress and so have plenty of experience using sewing machines, but it's the first time I've had this problem! Help! I've got SO much work to finish!!

Not knowing the type of machine you have, I would say the tension requires setting.  If you have an instruction book for the machine, it should tell you how to set this...

No Clanad - it's not the tension.  As I said, I'm a seamstress and so that was one of the first things I tried.  Thanks anyway.  It's a Toyota, by the way.
That kept happening to me on my machine and its so frustrating! when id threaded my machine up i missed one place where you have to thread the cotton through! duh ..took me ages to fathom out what id done wrong, check youre threaded up right - an easy mistake to make

Thanks Ladybird, but I've rethreaded it umpteen times tonight - not the problem though..

Oh what a silly moo I am!  I've solved the problem myself.. I'd changed the needle and put the new one in back to front!  DOH!!  I wouldn't mind, but I've changed needles more times than I care to remember - I thought I'd be able to do it in my sleep!  Oh well, as long as I can carry on .  Thanks to you both for trying to help.  Numan x
