Vesna Vulovic is a 'she'. Yes, she broke many bones but made a complete recovery.

The RAF gunner broke both ankles and took several hours convincing the Germans that captured him that he really had bailed out without a 'chute. (The aircraft was on fire and he decided to jump rather than burn).

Vesna Vulovic is/was Czech (I think).  She was an air stewardess in a plane which exploded in mid-air at 33,300 feet.  She was in the tail section of the plane, which meant that she fell more slowly than normal and was partly sheltered from the impact.  I think that the bit of debris that she was in also fell into a thick layer of forest, so there would have been about 100 feet depth of deceleration before reaching the ground.
