My friend is nearly 19 and taking a year out before going to Uni. She doesn't have a job and sees the 'gap year' as the thing she is doing. She gets asthma and is worried about having to pay £7 prescription fees once she turns 19 in the summer. I said that I thought she would be eligible for some benefits; surely if she is not working and has no income..? She isn't travelling or doing work experience - she is just hanging around I think. any ideas?

I've just checked her facebook- her job this year is working for her Dad's business as a photographer/graphic designer for his website etc. So, as I said, helping her Dad. She already has a Uni place to go to in September.
Pinkilady- I wish I was 19- I'm 41 tomorrow!!
If she's worried about prescription charges she could offset them by getting a prepayment discount. Don't know what the rates are but any pharmacist will advise.
If she's working for her dad won't he be paying her; or in place of this, supporting her including paying for prescriptions?
ask for a HC1 application form at the pharmacy, this is for people on low incomes and if applicable she can get free prescriptions. If she is currently 18 and not in full time education she should be paying for her prescriptions in any case as that is fraud and she could be liable to a £1000 fine if caught.
