Justice Secretary, the Rt Hon Ken Clarke MP, has little time for incarcerating people.
Why? Ford Open Prison, recent scene of mass rioting costing millions of pounds damage, boasts the above named luxuries for its inmates.
What, therefore, is prison actually for? How can wrongdoers be "punished" if they're living in the lap of luxury? And then they STILL riot? And guess who picks up the bill, Mr Clarke?

I find the naivety of some people, especially someone like you eyethenyew, quite shocking. My cousin, even when transferred to a Cat B was still locked up for 22 hours a day. It was a 2 hour drive away...so wasn't practicable for us to visit on a weekly basis (he only had a short sentence) How precious a phone call becomes in such a short space of time.
Kath...you cannot compare the two. Are you telling us that your husband wasn't warned about the conditions he might face? Horrible as it is for British soldiers...do you think it's much better for other nationalities?

Kathyan, your husband pays a pittance for pretty decent accomadation. He gets subsidized travel to come home to you. He does not have to pay for the toilets to be cleaned. There is a subsidized bar downstairs with extended opening hours. He is a member of a club that takes a minimum of 12 years to gain entry, is earning upwards of £35K, is highly employable when he leaves and finally can go outside whenever he choses to look at the stars!!!!
I am above rising to some of the personal attacks. I am far more aware of the CJ system than some people on here realise, hence this thread is posted with a deal of personal experience of what that system encompasses.
The whole point of the thread is to highlight the anomaly and irony of having people, some of them convicted of violent offences, being privvy to amenities which most of the law abiding public may not be able to afford, i.e. gym membership, membership of snooker clubs etc etc.
That, compounded with the undoubted likelihood of the same law abiding public, i.e. taxpayers, who have not only contributed to such luxuries in the first place, but will also be faced with the massive repair bill for the wanton damage done by the scum in that "holiday camp" of a prison, is very hard to bear.
Many people do not realise how "difficult" it is, no irony intended, to be given a custodial sentence. They are usually reserved for the more serious offenders. Prison ought not to be a recreational facility. They are there to be punished, not pampered.
