Broad generalisations re: Soldiers

Can someone give me a rough idea what an army trooper would need to do to become a corporal and subsequently a sargeant ? I'm sure there are loads of variables but I'd really like a rough and ready idea if you can. Is it easier to get promoted in the field or are field promotions a thing of the past ? Cheers .

lance-corporal about 1-2 years, corporal 3 years, sargeant 6-10 years - these are ball park figures as it is mainly about abilities as a leader, than length of service (though both are linked). Field promotions still exist but i'd say harder rather than easier as they would only promote you to sargeant if the existing sargeant went to meet his maker

My nephew went into the Junior Leaders at 16 and became a sergeant by 18. At age 18 he had to join the 'proper' army so had to start again. I think it took a couple of years to get his 1st stripe and about 2 more to get his corporal stripes. He has just been posted back to England to become an instructor and has been promoted to sergeant. He is now 25.
