After using the laptop for a day or two he will probably get a window up asking him to make a recovery DVD. This will normally fill up 2 or 3 DVDs so make sure he has some to hand.
The D drive may be a backup partition, but if the whole hard disk fails he will lose that partition.
If he has the backup DVDs he has made he can reinstall Windows if he buys a brand new...

If he has the backup DVDs he has made he can reinstall Windows if he buys a brand new empty hard disk.

A window normally pops up when you first set up computer asking you to make back up discs.
If not go into programs HP/Compaq and see if there`s a program to back up and restore.
I`ve found that many times the back up discs brought to me by friends don`t work, maybe not burned properly.
With HP you can also use F11 at startup to restore factory settings, without using the discs.
That`s as long as D drive is still there and the recovery files are intact.
