Your question, Kate, reminds me of my college days in Yorkshire when freshers were often confused by older students mentioning that they were going "to t' church" or "to t' nurse". It sometimes took them quite a while to realise that we weren't all fanatically concerned about religion or our health. We were referring to the Church Inn and the Nursery Tavern ;-)
