What was the doggie's name?
A white rose iceberg.
Something like a pieris which doesn't grow too big, but has flowers and nice coloured leaves? or what about a dogwood (no pun intended, truly) which has lovely vibrant red stems in the winter when the leaves fall? You can trim that to keep it to size.

A red robin
Red Robin, is a lovely shrub, but you need to prune it, othewise ot will get very out of control, the foilage is lovely though, planted one of these for our little dog, it's looking really well!............
forest flame would look nice.
It's a shame you have a small garden, although if you kept 'on top of it' ...

Rice Paper Plant (etrapanax papyrifer 'Rex')
... or there's an antique rose called Jean Rex.
Rex is king there is a female holly I think either gold or silver king... easy to keep pruned to size....
This is red dogwood in winter, kate, http://www.plantswhol...%20%20%20%20%20A.html

and this one's pieris http://www.google.co....PCDBQ&ved=0CDwQ9QEwBA (the red is bracts not flowers, the flowers are little white pendules)
PS ^^ Forest flame is a variety of pieris
