Painful Backache
10 Answers
Hi, I am an overweight smoker, lately diagnosed with an arthritic hip giving me a marked limp, and was wondering if this may be the cause of a painful lower backache.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks. bruce5755

Same here. I have general inflammatory arthritis in most joints, hips, spine etc... and get a lot of back ache.
When I first went to physio she did some tests including getting me to lie right on the edge of the bed with one leg at a time over the side to see how long I could keep my leg held up. It wasn't very long and she said my hip muscles were weak and not supporting me properly which was unbalancing my body, putting extra strain etc... and causing a lot of pain as it's such a core area supporting your body (if that makes sense).
Can they give you any extra help to support your body better and get it more balanced to see if it helps the pain?

Hi ummmm....I can trace it back to when I was in my 20's, During a house move-I picked up a wood milk crate that was full of LP records....that's when the pain started. I had a few bad years. Now it is very random....maybe once a year-I turn or do some odd movement-and my back gives me grief for a few days. 'Old' age does not help.......grrrrr
Are you hypermobile Ummm? I used to think I was more flexible as I did ballet and gymnastics until my rhumatologist said I'm hypermobile (can move more than I should), hence why I was good at ballet and gymnastics and that this can cause you to overdo things and cause pain in itself. It's called joint hypermobility syndrome I think.
