brake discs

I think my car needs new brake discs. Does anbody know how much it usually costs, all in to have them replaced/fixed? (My car is a Ford Fiesta Encore 1994)

Also I've done a bit of research on internet about realising when you need new brake discs and pads and it says when you hear it squeeking and rubbing when you brake its time to replace. The thing is in my car, it doesnt squeek or rub, the only way I can describe the sound is like a faint rocket sound when braking.

Fiesta disks won't be much more than the pads and it's not a lot longer job to change them.

Just take the wheel off (or stick your hands through the spokes of the wheel if you can) and feel the outside edge of the disks, if you can feel a significant lip on the edge of the disks or if you can feel any large scores across the surface of the disks then you may need new disks, but otherwise I'd agree with Eddie in saying the chances are you'll just need pads.

Don't walk into a garage and tell them you think you need disks though, if you say you think you need them a lot of places will change them regardless of a need for them.

Front or rear brakes?

Assuming that you buy 'substitute' parts, rather than Ford parts, a pair of front wheel discs will cost around £15 (or around £20 if your car has ABS). A pair of rear wheel discs might cost around £40. Labour at a local garage might cost around £48 per hour, including VAT. (Changing brake discs is a fairly quick and simple job). So it won't be a massively expensive job to replace the disks.

I don't think they fitted rear disks to any fiestas of that age, if they did it would only be on the RS turbo. or similar, certainly not the the base model encore.

Fiesta discs and pads. I hour to replace the lot.
Easy for even unexperienced diy'er.
Trolley jack/axle stand/a few spanners are all that's needed.
I buy Fiesta discs around £8 each and pads around £10 a set.

Common on Fiestas is badly worn discs and where pads rub on unevenly worn edges of discs.

Disks are another one of those items you see the cost of and think sometimes "how the hell do they sell them at that price and make a profit"

When I worked for Ford a few years back .. cost for discs and pads for Fiesta was about £12 for the lot.

I know it depends on how expensive the place is but on average would we be talking more than £100 if they were to replace the discs?

I'd reckon on well under £100. My local garage certainly wouldn't charge that much but avoid Ford main dealers. (The one I worked for up until a few months back were charging £72 + VAT per hour).

A non-main dealer garage will charge you around £100.
