Plant gone mad!

I have a cheese plant which is threatening to take over the living room soon!
I bought it about 2 years ago and it was about 18 inches high, it is now a 5 foot monster and growing. Can you "prune" them and also cut back the air roots that are trailing all over the place or would it kill the plant? It would be a shame to get rid of it as it is quite beautiful but it's starting to look like a jungle in here!! Any suggestions?

You can cut the leaves right back to the main stem with a very sharp knife, and also remove the air-roots - it will look a bit tatty to start with, but, being a succulent, will soon sprout new leaves, given a reasonable amount of water (don't drown it!!) - a little bit of baby-bio or diluted nettle juice will help. Worth checking under pot to see if roots are attacking your carpet in their hunt for liquid sustenance; if they are, trim them off and put it in a larger pot. Bear in mind, these are epiphytes which normally grow in the forks of Amazonian trees where there are no pot restrictions, and no shortage of water !

Once it starts to regrow, prune the old leaves again every year - you can also root cut leaves in moist compost to breed yet more potential triffids.

Thanks for your advice. I had been tempted to cut it back before but was too scared in case I damaged it. It looks much better now and so does the living room!

you could have sold it as companys with large offices etc buy large house plants..and you could have got a small one and started again..
