Why do I get an additional start up page appearing when I'm already using firefox?

Because you have two home pages set. EIther that or you closed it with two tabs open.

Don't have either of those SB. It's the basic start up page that appears on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. If I don't zap it quickly an advert appears. Thanks for your answer

Sounds more like malware then.
Download the free version of malwarebytes from:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
and run a full scan.
