Halogen Heaters

Does anyone know of any downsides of having a halogen heater? I am considering buying one, and I would welcome any comments, ie running costs etc.

Like all portable electric heaters, they are expensive to run. One bar costs around 4p an hour. Howver, the heat really is instant.
They are lightweight, easy to manouevre and give a very cheery glow. In my opinion - the best of the portable heaters available.
I would be very wary of using them if there is a possibility of them being knocked over by small children or animals. Or if they could be touched by small children - they do get hot.
But if you need instant warmth for an hour or so, they are excellent.

They don't cost any more or any less than a 'normal' bar fire. I'm sure I've posted such info up here before. Both sorts are very efficient at converting the electricity from the socket in your wall into heat. But because the cost of electricity (per kilowatt-hour or therm, whatever) is more expensive than most other sources of energy (bottled gas the exception), in MOST cases they will work out more expensive to run. This is even allowing that other sources aren't as efficient as electricity at converting fuel into heat.
They do have their plus points - as Ethel highlights above.
