He may not have been guilty of murdering Jo, but there is something very odd and shifty about him.....Maybe he's actually enjoyed his 15 minutes of notoriety.

They were printing the facts given to them by the police and then printing "their interpretations" and opinions in the press.

Why should one apologise for acting on evidence and opinions evaluated at the time, but later proved incorrect?

If an allegation is printed in a newspaper, and it turns out to be untrue, the newspaper should be made to print the recognition of its untruth in the same font size as the orginal allegation.

The media didn't make an allegation. He was arrested on 'suspicion' of murder.

And if this arrest is the correct one, the News section here will be full of ABers apologising for blaming the landlord, the father and the boyfriend.............

Because that's known as "getting it wrong". If you tell your readers nonsense, it's not much of an excuse to say "Oh, but a policeman told me so!" The newspaper reports went way beyond what the police said.

jno....."getting it wrong for the right reasons" and "getting it wrong for the wrong reasons" arr two different concepts and one "might" apologise for the latter.

Getting it wrong for the right reasons is so very very common in all aspects of life occurring day after day in all parts of the world.
What is it? One assesses the best evidence available, one basis the conclusions and actions based on one´s experience and then one makes a decision.
It might be the right decision or ultimately it may turn out to be the wrong decision....if the latter, then there is no need to apologise for your actions.

On Wednesday, 24 February 1988, The Daily Telegraph was printed with the wrong date: Thursday 25 February was printed by mistake.

They`ll only apologise if he sues them and he probably doesn`t have the money for that. He`d then get a tiny 1 inch apology hidden in the corner of the page.
I think it was right to report someone had been arrested and it was right to arrest him while he was investigated but I don`t think they should publicise names until someone has been formally charged. Mud sticks.

Although the media did go over the top the facts still remain. He told other residents that he'd seen Jo with two people the night she disappeared. The residents informed the police. They interviewed him and he denied it. He's apparently a very intelligent man....and this is a murder inquiry not some petty crime. He has, at least partly, himself to blame.

I think he was a publicity seeker but I am sure Max Clifford will be on his case soon

So did I...and I said that when he was arrested. It was like he got swept away with the excitement of it all.
