What's wrong with me?
20 Answers
Im 17 years old and have been feeling extremely down recently. I spend a lot of time crying over the silliest things and the slightest thing can set me off. I have been through quite a lot in the past 5 years however I have never really talked to anyone about it and im worried its all catching back up with me. I have also been having real trouble sleeping for the past 3/4 months and have lost nearly 2 stone in the past month or two without wanting too. I don't feel like doing much like going out with my friends, I'd rather stay in however when I do go out I've been drinking a lot (which I know is not helping my situation but I always feel like everything will go away if im drunk.) I am too afraid to speak to my mum as she has suffered from depression in the past and I don't want her too get ill again through worry. I want to speak to someone but I don't know who, or what I should say? I don't know if im just over reacting.

hi lil miss me,
ah thats good youve got into see your doctor, thats a big step, so well done you.
if youre owt like me, sitting there infront of him/her, id get tongue tied or not say what i really want to say, and things would come out all wrong...
sooo, how about maybe writing everything down on a piece of paper before you go, about how you truly feel inside...

Sounds like depression to me but I'm no doctor; that's the person you need to be talking to, your doctor. But don't get fobbed off with anti-depressants, you need to talk it through not take chemicals.
Exercise is one of the best antidotes to depression, the trouble is it makes you not want to be bothered to do anything. Try making arrangements to meet up with a friend to go for a walk, you're not likely to let them down so more likely to actually go.
Make yourself get up and go and you'll find that you start feeling better.

sooo, how about maybe writing everything down on a piece of paper before you go, about how you truly feel inside etc, so if you do feel a little daunted, you could just hand it to him to have a read, so he can get an overall picture of things, before you both get down to actually discussing matters,
aww i hope you soon pick up lil miss, its horrible feeling like this isnt it.. i know :o) xx
and remember theres always here you can come, theres some lovely people on here, all willing to give you an ear and some words of encouragement :o)

Please call your dr and make an appointment... it may be a case that you need some counselling or it could just be that you have low seratonin and need a pick me up (natural things like pumpkin seeds, cauliflower, dark chocolate and st johns wort are good)
You are not alone so dont suffer the way you are.
Take care and remember there are people to help you x

hiya hun sounds a lot like depression and it does run in families i would advice counseling instead of taking the first medication your offered it might be you just need to talk to someone about the past and for them to teach you coping methods. i'm a nurse and some doctors just offer patients anti depressants but say you want to see a counselor first because most people just get medication and things go back to normal but speaking to someone you don't know and who won't judge can just be as good as medication but if that don't work than medication is the next option. also, your still young and your hormones are still not perfectly balanced so that could contribute to the lowness
hope it helps

Please don't write off antidepressants completely. I had post natal depression after 3rd child, panic attacks etc. Was the most horrible feeling. My doctor said my serotonin levels had fallen too low to get back to normal themselves. I took antidepressants for two years and they worked to let me get back to living normally (I couldn't leave my bedroom for two weeks). The getting out and about then naturally started to raise the levels and I gradually came off them. They are not always the answer to everything, but I would hate to imagine how bad I could have got without that "kick-start"
Firstly, nothing is wrong with you, a lot ofpeople go through life having bouts of depression or down times. To be honest this time of year it is very common to feel down. You say your mum has had depression, that may be the reason u r also feeling low. As a mum I know I would rather my child come to me, so I can help than them sit alone and not know which way to turn. Also, u can go on a downward spiral if u let it take hold because the lower u get the less u want to do therefore u can lose contact with friends etc. I would definitely talk to Mum or another close friend or relative and if you feel that you need to then go along and speak to your doctor. whatever u do dont ignore it, we are here on AB if ever u feel the need to talk, we are all well mostly friendly people with a lot of lifes experiences. Good Luck and I hope u r feeling better soon. Get out in the sunshine I find that helps. xx
