For an anniversary gift. Not one of the memorable ones like silver, but it's 36 years. Shall I play it safe with something ornamental, or choccies, or are there any ideas for something different?

Thanks!

Have a look here, why not combine two numbers which add up to 36? http://www.anniversaryideas.co.uk/wedding.htm
defo NOT something ornamental, your choice may be something they'd really hate and then they're stuck with it and you've wasted your money. a 36th anniversary is bone china so how about some nice mugs?
a nice unusual t pot ?
My favourite anniversary present last year was a pair of tickets to Vinopolis in London, it was a really great day out :)
