I had soft toys - scottie dog, sealyham dog, a polar bear and cub but no actual teddy. When bemoaning the lack of a childhood teddy my dear aunt (with whom I shared a birthday) asked a friend of hers to make a special teddy for her youngest niece. I met that woman and she was shocked to see such a grown up woman!
Nope, never had one. Only rich people had dollies in my day (the thirties depression). It didn't matter - everyone I knew was poor and none of us had anything except what we found for ourselves. Like a piece of chalk to play hopscotch or an old bicycle wheel for a hoop. I had a very happy childhood - the park was near and the pit dumps and a few fields for blackberrying in the autumn.
I still have my teddy, he has one leg missing, from when my brother sat on him... I am sure the leg is somewhere. He was bought before I was born, and I believe was very expensive for those days... but he's a shabby old thing now. He's always been called Teddy, but his Sunday name - since I felt he should have a name - is Francis.
My grandma knitted me a poodle which I still have too, her name is Woppy, although she's very gappy and moth-eaten now - Woppy is short for Woppazenalena (see, I can still remember it!).
I had three dolls, Joanna was a baby doll and I still have her in a shoe box, but her arms and legs have fallen off as the rubber band perished (the bits are in the box too). I then got a small walking doll whose name was Josephine, I don't know what happened to her - but when I was seven, I got a big walking doll, I still have her in box, her name is Christabel. I also remember a black baby doll whose name was Felicity - my grandma thought I said Solicitor, that's why I remember her!

There are two that I have kept and am very fond of.
The first I was given as a baby and his name is Best Baby. He's been patched up a few times but is still in good nik. I intend to give him to my first child.
The second is a bear I was given when I was 5 or 6. At the time I was desperate for a care bear but I think they were beyond the budget so my Dad got me a lovely soft teddy and explained I couldn't have a care bear just yet, so I said tht was fine and I would call him Care Bear for now. His name has forever remained Care Bear For Now.
