thankyou all i was sure that was the answer but wasnt sure cheers peepz
If the moon was made of cheese it would be a lot brighter than it is.Most cheeses have a higher albedo than the moon (unless they are covered in mould). The moon also reflects sunlight that has been reflected from the earth except when it is in the earth's shadow. Normally it is difficult to see as the eye is dazzled by the part of the moon reflecting the sun, but when the moon is 'new' and there is only a sliver of direct solar illumination it is quite easy to see.
I know what you mean, jomifl, sometimes if there is a bright crescent moon, you can still see the full circular shape of it lurking up there.
Cottage cheese reflects light if you do not draw the curtains
