Heard that these 2 big players have merged. I didn't that would be possible due to competition rules. Is there any truth in this ?

While there might be trading agreement between Coop Travel and Thomas Cook (so that they can sell each other's deals) they don't seem to have merged. Coop Travel remains a trading name of the MidCounties Co-operative Society, while Thomas Cook trades also trades as Neilson, Direct Holidays and Club 1830.
TUI is completely separate, trading as TUI (in Spain & Germany only), MosTravel, Premium Traveller, HotelBeds, Arke, First Choice, LateRooms.com, Hayes & Jarvis, Fritidsresor, JetAir, Marmara, Nouvelle Frontiers, Quark Expeditions and The Moorings.
