I started a new job two months’ ago with a marketing company as a marketing assistant on six month probation. I seem to be doing ok. At the same time the department hired a Secretary. She has made a big impression on every one and is ultra-efficient. Gossip is going around that the management is going to swap us (me and the secretary) around. I don’t mind doing admin or secretarial work (did it at my last job) but the pay difference would be about £7,000. Almost the same thing happened to me a couple of years’ ago at another company, and I became so resentful I ended up leaving. If the gossip is true, then legally I have no rights because I have only been working here 2 months. Also, financially I simply can’t afford to get gobby and leave. I have been called to a review meeting next week. If they do want to swap our two job around – is there anything I can say or do to keep my current job??? - Any suggestions???
Would need more info re the company's contractual obligations towards you. Can they swap job roles within your 6 month probation? If you can demonstrate that you have met and/or exceeded their expectations in relation to the job role, would you have any kind of basis for appeal if made you a secretary and bumped up the existing secretary?. It seems unfair, but dont know enough about your company.
It seems unfair to me too, JD1984!! I cannot demonstrate that I meet expectations in relation to the job role, since I have only worked their 2 months. If the gossip is true then it is all about personalities rather than the ability to do the job anyway. What is really nasty is that I will have to show willing to take up this other role in the company, otherwise they will just sack me (which they can do under both the contract and employment laws).
contact ACAS, mikey, for some impartial advice before you go into your meeting - it doesn't cost you anything. They are really helpful - and I see that they are there for phone calls until 1pm today, give 'em a ring. http://www.acas.org.u...x.aspx?articleid=2042
