Just which is the more economical, leaving the boiler on 24/7; or use the timer switches (especially at night ) to turn off?

Depends how well insulated your house is.

Depends how well insulated your house is.
Turn it off when not required - it will save you a small fortune.
Turning it off will always use less.

The rate of heat leaking from the house is directly proportional to the temperature difference. When you turn it off the temperature inside falls and consequently the rate of heat loss falls too.

Of course you have to put more heat in to get it back up to temperature when it is restarted but the total heat provided by the boiler is less than if it had been left on.
I leave mine on, it's on a thermostat so clicks on when the temperature drops below 16-17 degrees C.
