Boating on The Norfolk Broads ....

We have booked a nice cruiser for August for a week but I am apprehensive as I am very active, even when on holiday, and I am worried I will be very bored ? I know you moor up at pubs/villages etc, but will I like it ? Have you been on one ? They are really expensive aswell, so hope its not a waste of money.....

My friends hired a boat for a week, out of Ely, and were bored stiff within a day or so!

However the area they went to hasn't really got a great deal to offer. That's not the case with the Norfolk broads. If you do plenty of advance planning, I'm confident that you'll really enjoy yourself. Don't just limit yourself to what's immediately by the river. Be prepared to moor up for most of a day and use public transport to explore the area.

In particular, if you'll be in the Wroxham area, hop on a train into Norwich or go the other way for a day at the seaside (Cromer or, possibly Sheringham). Route map here:

Think of sitting on the boat all day as akin to sitting in a holiday hotel all day. You'd be bored stiff. If, on the other hand, you use the boat as a mobile base for exploration further afield, you'll have a really great time.

I've been with a variety of friends and family over the years and have never yet been bored. What to see depends on where you are starting from. In a week you're not going to find it easy to cross from South to North Broads (or vice versa) but the idea of walking where you can and taking the bus where you can't would let you see a lot more than simply being tied to the boat. On the other hand there are sufficient villages, buildings and (dare I say it) pubs to keep most folk somewhat occupied. Personally I take binoculars, a camera, and some books which allow me to identify birds, flowers and trees; that book I never seem to find enough time to read during the working week and a radio - TV reception is chancy and the radio has so much to offer when you let it! As a Scot I generally miss hills in a landscape but the Broads has its own charm.

I have been a few times and loved it, bored never. There are lots of things to see and do. You can also relax if you are able, plenty of great places for meals out. Have a look at this for ideas.

Depends which parts of the Broads you go on, there's some nice little villages such as Horning, Oulton and Beccles.
