How to block incoming Private Calls?

How can incoming private calles to a landline be stopped or rejected? Or better yet to find out who the private caller is.

Do the phone companies offer a service where private number callers can be identified or blocked at all?

I know that BT offer this service - I used to work for a compnay who withheld their number, and very very occasionally, I would get a mesasge saying something like "the person you are calling does not accept withheld numbers. Please unwithold your number and try again".

You don't say which phone company you're with (or even whether you're in the UK or not).

Assuming you're in the UK, the Data Protection Act prevents any phone company revealing the name and/or address associated with a phone number. (This does not, of course, stop the phone companies from providing the information to the police if you're receiving calls that are obscene or causing harassment).

Choose to refuse or something similar used to be available on a short term basis if you were suffering nuisance calls. From memory it was a few weeks, for free - this was enough to stop whoever was troubling us, possibly because he/she thought they had been identified. BT will not reveal any details of withheld numbers but they will record the the details of a nuisance caller whom you identify by dialling a code after the call was received to activate the system. If it turns into a case then the details will be handed over to the police. Check the proper story with 150.
